“UN SOLO NOME” – NATIONAL PRAYER BREAKFAST 2017

UN SOLO NOME
L’anno scorso Obama, quest’anno Trump. Cambiano i presidenti, cambiano i partiti al governo, ma ciò che rende grande ai miei occhi (ed al mio cuore) gli Stati Uniti d’America, è l’unità che manifesta in momenti solenni ed identitari. Uno di questi è il National Prayer Breakfast. Questo evento così atteso negli USA, giunto quest’anno alla sua 65esima edizione, si tiene ogni primo giovedì del mese di febbraio, con le più alte cariche del governo federale e delegati da tutto il mondo.
Quello che non è cambiato rispetto allo scorso anno, e rispetto e tutte le precedenti edizioni, è il riconoscimento della supremazia di Dio su ogni uomo, anche il Presidente. Qui, miei cari, al National Prayer Brekfast è stato innalzato Gesù! Sentire dire dalla bocca dei potenti: “Cristo è il Salvatore”, mi ha benedetto!

Dopo lo speech del Presidente Trump è intervenuto anche il Re di Giordania Abdallah II. Anche Sua Maestà, ha testualmente affermato che “Dio è il Signore della Terra”. Sempre al di là di ogni aspettativa, sempre profondamente benedetto, considero un grande onore e privilegio aver vissuto questa esperienza ancora una volta.
Un solo nome, quello di Gesù! God belss America, God bless us!

 

TRUMP
Come ci si aspettava in questo contesto, Trump è stato accolto con grande calore. Insieme a lui il VicePresidente Mike Pence, un uomo particolarmente distintosi per la sua umiltà. Trump ha dichiarato: “Gli Usa hanno il sistema di immigrazione più generoso al mondo ma ci sono quelli che si approfittano della generosità” promettendo di sviluppare un sistema che garantisca che le persone in arrivo nel Paese “amino noi e i nostri valori”. Poi, in uno dei passaggi più significativi Trump ha affermato che la libertà è un dono di Dio e non del governo.

 

 

 

INCREDIBILE MA VERO
Non pensavo si ricordasse di me, ma appena mi ha visto da lontano mi ha chiamato per nome. E ci siamo abbracciati.
Lo scorso anno vi raccontai la storia di Sister Rosemary. Definita dal Time una delle donne più influenti al mondo, combatte i ribelli dell’Uguanda senza paura ma con l’arma dell’amore.
L’amore di Gesù.
Salvando la vita a giovani donne.
Bene. Lo scorso anno raccontò pubblicamente e davanti ai potenti del mondo la storia di Josephine. Mi commuovo mentre scrivo, perché questa ragazza che vedete al mio fianco nella foto è Josephine. Quest’anno è qui.
Questa giovane donna ha subito le più indicibili sofferenze e violenze fisiche. Ve le risparmio per decenza.
Oggi è qui, grazie al lavoro di Sister Rosemary.
Grazie sopratutto all’amore di Dio.
Per testimoniare che ciò che è impossibile agli uomini è possibile a Dio.
Chi l’avrebbe detto che avrei conosciuto dopo Rosemary anche Josephine.
Incredibile ma vero!

INCONTRI SPECIALI

Così li definisco. Incontri con persone che ti segnano, che esercitano influenza sulla tua vita. Quest’anno tra i rappresentanti istituzionali dall’Italia, vi era il senatore Lucio Malan, con cui collaboro. Sono stati giorni frenetici per lui, pieni di impegni, ma abbiamo avuto il piacere di essere insieme a cena con i nostri amici (li considero tutti una benedizione per me!) Pasquale, Rick e Barnaba (e le loro rispettive mogli) con un grande e stimatissimo diplomatico USA: John Nakamura. Momenti di grande intensità morale e spirituale.
Il Presidente George Wood, sovrintendente generale della “Assemblee di Dio” negli USA invece mi ha profondamente incoraggiato con i suoi pensieri e la sua attenzione. Un vero onore quello di aver condiviso questo #nationalprayerbreakfast con lui. Un uomo di Dio, un uomo profondamente ispirato. Ho avuto con lui e la moglie un prezioso tempo di comunione! Mi hanno molto incoraggiato.
Prima di partire mi sono detto:”…sarebbe bello se quest’anno ci fosse al #nationalprayerbreakfast2017 il Pastore Rick Warren”. Eccoci, non solo è venuto ma ho avuto l’onore di conoscerlo, in un meeting più ristretto. E di stabilire un contatto, ciò che più mi interessava. Per intenderci: oltre che aver fondato una delle più grandi chiese negli USA il pastore Warren ha scritto il libro più venduto nella storia degli Stati Uniti dopo la Bibbia (sic!). Nella sua chiesa ha ospitato e moderato anche dibattiti tra candidati presidenti. Nel 2008 fu chiamato da Obama per la preghiera in occasione del suo giuramento! Ma per me è soprattutto un pilastro della fede, un uomo di Dio. Conoscerlo mi ha riempito di gioia.

 

TUTTO PUO’ SUCCEDERE

Ho raccontato di questi meravigliosi incontri, che mi hanno benedetto profondamente. Ma, in particolare, desidero raccontarvi dell’incredibile storia di Tamrat Layne, ex primo ministro dell’Etiopia tra il 1991 e il 1996. Un uomo praticamente trasformato. Rivoluzionario della prima ora, salito al potere per rovesciare chi governava, di fede comunista, era arrivato ad accumulare un grande potere nelle sue mani. Eppure la sua è stata una storia fatta di tradimenti, vendette e corruzione. Disponibile ad avviare un processo di democratizzazione nel paese, favorevole all’economia di mercato, viene praticamente emarginato e poi processato, fino ad essere incarcerato. Mi riesce difficile riassumere, ma mentre parlava a tutti noi, piangeva nel raccontare che in prigione aveva conosciuto Gesù. Del Suo amore, della Sua grazia. Sua moglie, nel frattempo rifugiata in Kenya, si era anche’ella convertita a Cristo! Dio aveva un piano per la sua vita. Appena uscito di prigione dopo 12 anni, sente di recarsi dal suo vecchio amico, ancora presidente, per il quale aveva inizialmente covato odio, un odio che Gesù aveva trasformato in amore. Lo perdonò. Oggi si occupa del suo paese, presentando la figura di Gesù. Questa storia mi ha convinto che quando Dio opera, tutto può succedere! 

 

NIAF – National Italian American Foundation

Approfittando della breve distanza, insieme ad un gruppo di amici ho fatto visita al NIAF – National Italian American Foundation. Un luogo simbolico, ricco di storia, che raccoglie memorialistica e documenti in merito allo storico rapporto tra Stati Uniti ed Italia. Due paesi, due culture ed una grande #storia ! Mi ha commosso vedere e leggere di tutti quegli uomini di origini italiane che hanno reso grande l’America ! Tra questi, mi ha colpito il ritratto del grande Giudice della Corte Costituzionale Antonio Scalia, recentemente scomparso.
Essere Italiani, da questi parti è motivo di orgoglio…

 

P.S. Condividere questa speciale esperienza insieme al mio amico e fratello Ming è stato un grande onore. L’assistenza poi di Merl Morgan è stata preziosa. Grazie Guy per averci messo in connessione … per tutto questo, un sentito e profondo ringraziamento a Dio!

ONLY ONE NAME

Last year, Obama, this year Trump. Once again I was able to attend, sent by my mentor Guy Sottile, the National Prayer Breakfast. This much-awaited event in the U.S., now in its 65th edition, is held every first Thursday of February, with the highest levels of the federal government and delegates from around the world.

What has not changed from last year, and compared to all editions, is the recognition of the supremacy of God on every man, even the president. Here, my dear, at the National Prayer Breakfast – Jesus was lifted up!
Hearing this from the mouth of the mighty: Christ is the Savior, was an incredible blessing for me!

After the speech of President Trump, the King of Jordan Abdallah II spoke. Even his excellency, literally said that “God is the Lord of the Earth.” Always beyond all expectations, always deeply blessed, I consider it a great honor and privilege to have lived this experience once again.
Only one name, the name of Jesus! God bless America, God bless us!

As expected in this context, President Trump was greeted with great warmth. With him, Vice-President Mike Pence, a particularly distinguished man for his humility. Trump said: “The US has the most generous immigration system in the world but there are those who take advantage of the generosity” promising to develop a system to ensure that people arriving in the country ” must love us and our values.” Then, in one of the most significant steps Trump said that freedom is a gift from God and not from the government!

INCREDIBLE BUT TRUE

I did not think she remembered me, but as soon as she saw me from a distance she called me by name. And we hugged.

Last year I told the story of Sister Rosemary. Defined by the Time one of the most influential women in the world, she fought the Uganda rebels without fear but with the weapon of love.

The love of Jesus.

Saving the lives of young women. Last year Sister Rosemary told publicly and before the powerful leaders of the world the story of Josephine. I am moved to tears as I write, because the girl you see at my side in the picture is Josephine. This year she is here! This young woman has suffered the most unspeakable suffering and physical violence. Today she is here, thanks to the work of Sister Rosemary. Thanks especially to the love of God!

To testify that what is impossible with men is possible with God. Who would have thought that I would meet after Rosemary also Josephine. Unbelievable but true!

SPECIAL MEETINGS

Before leaving, I said: “… it would be nice if this year there was the opportunity to meet the 2017 Breakfast speaker Rick Warren”. Well, I had the honor not only to know him, but spend some time in a more intimate meeting. Knowing Rick Warren filled me with joy.

ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN

I told you about these wonderful encounters that have blessed me deeply. But, I particularly want to tell the incredible story of Tamirat Layne, former Prime Minister of Ethiopia between 1991 and 1996. A man virtually transformed.

A Revolutionary of the first hour, came to power to overthrow those who were leading the country, a communist in faith, Tamirat had managed to accumulate a lot of power in his hands. Yet his is a story of betrayal, revenge and corruption. Available to launch a demo-cratization process in the country, favorable to the market economy, he was virtually marginalized and later tried, until being jailed.

I find it difficult to summarize, but as he spoke to all of us, he wept in telling us that in prison – he met Jesus, His love and His grace. His wife, meanwhile had fled to Kenya, where she was converted to Christ! God had a plan for his life. Just out of prison after 12 years, he was led to go from his old friend, still the President, for which he had initially harbored hatred, a hatred that Jesus had turned into love. He forgave him. Today Tamirat is in charge of his country, presenting and proclaiming the name of Jesus! This story convinced me that when God works, anything can happen!

Taking advantage of the short distance, along with a group of friends, I visited the NIAF – National Italian American Foundation. A symbolic place, rich in history, which collects memoirs and documents about the historical relationship between the United States and Italy. Two countries, two cultures and a great story! I was moved to see and read of all men of Italian origin that have made America great! Among them, I was struck by the portrait of the great Judge of the Constitutional Court Antonio Scalia, who died recently.

Being Italian, in these surroundings is a source of pride …

It was a blessing and an honor to share this incredible experience with my friend and brother in the Lord brother Ming, who calls himself Guy’s Timothy, what a great honor. And also with the assistance of Merle Morgan which was invaluable. Thank you Guy for making this possible! Thank you also, Guy, for putting me in contact to so many incredible giants … for all this, I have a sincere and profound appreciation for you and an infinite gratitude to God!
